The first phase of the annual tiger census
▪ The first phase of the annual tiger census in the Gudalur forest division in the Nilgiris has begun.
▪ “Following the successful completion of the third phase of tiger estimation training using camera traps in the Mudumalai Tiger Reserve, Gudalur Forest Division, the first phase of the annual tiger census will go on from April 28 to May 5.
▪ As part of the operation, 27 transects have been selected across six forest ranges.
Nilgiri tahr count
▪ The Forest Department said the census for the State animal — Nilgiri tahr — was successfully
completed last month. It was carried out in the Mukurthi National Park.
▪ Researchers from the Advanced Institute for Wildlife Conservation and volunteers from the
Worldwide Fund for Nature participated in the exercise
