EC to begin delimitation exercise in Assam
- The Election Commission of India ECI has initiated the delimitation process for assembly and parliamentary constituencies in Assam, as per Section 8A of Representation of People Act (RPA), 1950.
- Last delimitation of constituencies in Assam was done on the basis of 1971 census figures.
- The process will be based on Census data from 2001
- As per Section 8A of the Representation of People’s Act RPA 1950, the President can order a delimitation exercise to be carried out in four North East States (NES)-Arunachal Pradesh, Assam, Manipur and Nagaland.
Note
- Delimitation is the process of fixing limits or boundaries of territorial constituencies in a country or a state with a legislative body.
- The job of delimitation is assigned to the Delimitation Commission or a Boundary Commission.
- It has been constituted 4 times – in 1952 under the Delimitation Commission Act, 1952, in 1963 under Delimitation Commission Act, 1962, in 1973 under Delimitation Act, 1972 and in 2002 under Delimitation Act, 2002.
- Its orders cannot be questioned before any court.
- Members : A retired Judge of SC, Chief Election Commissioner of India, State Election Commissioner (of respective state).
