▪ The Central Mining Department has ordered the establishment of a project management unit to facilitate constructive coordination with states for the smooth implementation of the Prime Minister’s Mineral Sector Welfare Scheme (Pradhan Mantri Khanij Kshetra Kalyan Yojana) for the development of people affected by mineral mining activities throughout the country.
▪ In 2015, the central government implemented the Prime Minister’s Mineral Sector Welfare Scheme (PMKKKY) by the Ministry of Mines to improve the welfare of areas and people affected by mining operations.
▪ Central, state government institutions, or private companies engaged in mineral mining must contribute 30 percent of the royalty payment from the granted leases to PMKKKY.
▪ This fund is added to the DMF account. Of this, 70 percent of the funds should be spent directly on various development and welfare schemes in mining-affected areas to improve the living standards of people in these areas.
