Largest Asian tortoise reintroduced in Nagaland community reserve
▪ Asian giant tortoise – largest tortoise in mainland Asia and critically endangered.
▪ Location: Reintroduced into the Zeliang Community Reserve, Peren district, Nagaland. The species was once abundant in Nagaland.
▪ The event was a collaborative effort between the Nagaland Forest Department and the India Turtle Conservation Programme.
▪ Reintroduction Method: The tortoises were initially placed in a “soft-release enclosure” to develop site fidelity before full dispersal.
