World Blood Donor Day – June 14

  • World Blood Donor Day (WBDD) is annually observed on 14th June across the world.
  • To raise awareness about the significance of donating blood and to thank voluntary unpaid blood donors for their life-saving gifts of blood.
  • The annual observance of WBDD is led by the World Health Organization (WHO).
  • Theme for 2023 – “Give blood, give plasma, share life, share often.”

Background:

  • In 2004, the WHO initiated and established the observance of World Blood Donor Day on 14th June to mark the birth Anniversary of Karl Landsteiner (1868-1943), Austrian-American immunologist.

World Elder Abuse Awareness Day – June 15

  • The World Elder Abuse Awareness Day (WEAAD) is

observed on June 15th every year. 

  • It was officially recognized by the United Nations

General Assembly in its resolution December 2011,

following a request by the International Network for the

Prevention of Elder Abuse (INPEA).

  • Theme 2023 – “Closing the Circle: Addressing Gender-Based

Violence (GBV) in Older Age Policy, Law and Evidence-based Responses”.

Defence

Two Warships Launched

  • Anjadip, Anti-Submarine Shallow Water Craft (ASWSWC) & Sanshodhak, Survey Vessel Large (SVL)
  • They were launched by Garden Reach Shipbuilders and Engineers Ltd. (GRSE) at shipbuilding facility of Larsen & Toubro (L&T) in Kattupalli, Chennai, Tamil Nadu.
  • Kolkata based GRSE is building eight ASWSWCs and four SVLs for the Indian Navy.
  • Two warships of INS (Indian Naval Ship) ‘Anjadip’, the 3rd of eight indigenously built Anti-Submarine Warfare Shallow Water Craft (ASW-SWC), and INS ‘Sanshodhak’, the 4th and last in the series of Survey Vessels (Large) (SVL) Project were launched.

Awards & Honours

Central Banking Awards 2023 

  • Reserve Bank of India (RBI) Governor Shaktikanta Das received the ‘Governor of the Year’ award at the Central Banking Awards 2023 in London. 
  • The Award was given for his work of cemented critical reforms, overseen world leading payments innovation and steered India through difficult times with a steady hand and well-crafted turn of phrase.
