COP27 sets up loss and damage fund
- The 27th United Nations Climate Change conference is held from in Sharm El Sheikh, Egypt.
- The COP27 made history by establishing a fund for losses and damages arising from climate change — a demand developing countries facing the devastating impacts of global warming have made for decades, and that has been consistently blocked by rich countries until now.
- COP27 President Sameh Shoukry announced that the loss and damage fund would serve the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change.
About Conference of the Parties (COP)
- The COP is the supreme decision-making body of the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change (UNFCCC).
- All States that are Parties to UNFCCC are represented at the COP.
- The first COP meeting was held in Berlin, Germany in March, 1995.
