Census 2027 to retain urban area definition of previous count in 2011
• Urban Area Definition: The Census 2027 will use the same definition for urban areas as the
2011 Census. This is to ensure uniformity and allow for the comparison of urbanization trends.
• Statutory towns: Municipal corporations, cantonment boards, notified town area committees,
town panchayats, nagar palikas.
• Definition of a “Census Town”: A census town is a non-statutory urban unit defined by three
criteria:
o A minimum population of 5,000 persons.
o A population density of at least 400 persons per sq. km.
o At least 75% of the male working population engaged in non-agricultural pursuits.
