International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA)
▪ IAEA is an intergovernmental organization that seeks to promote the peaceful use of atomic
energy and prevent its use for any military purpose, including nuclear weapons.
▪ It was established in 1957 within the UN as the world’s “Atoms for Peace” organization and is
governed by its own founding agreement – the IAEA Statute.
▪ It reports to both UNGA and UNSC and is headquartered at the UN Office in Vienna, Austria.
▪ In 2005, it was awarded the Nobel Peace Prize for its work toward a safe and peaceful world.
▪ IAEA has 178 member countries, with India being one of its founding members.
