New species of snakes found in sahyadri tiger reserve of Maharashtra, named after Tejas Thackeray

  • A new species of snake called Thackeray’s Cat Snake (scientific name Boiga thackeray) named after Tejas Thackeray, younger son of Shiv Sena chief Uddhav Thackeray, has been found in Sahyadri tiger reservein Koyna area of Satara district in Maharashtra after 125 years.

  • Genus: This species usually falls in the category of cat snake or cat-eyed snakes and belongs to the genus Boiga.
  • Reason for the name: Tejas Thackeray first observed this species in 2015 and studied its behavior in detail. He handed over the details to the Pune-based Biodiversity Conservation Foundation and helped in further research.
  • Habitat: These snakes belonging to this genus are found all over India, but some species are found only in the Western Ghats.
