▪ The report titled “Towards Resilient and Prosperous Cities in India” was released by the World Bank in collaboration with the Union Ministry of Housing and Urban Affairs.
▪ Indian cities are projected to contribute 70% of new jobs by 2030.
▪ Urban population expected to double to 951 million by 2050.
▪ Over 144 million new homes will be needed by 2070.
▪ Heat waves and urban heat island effects are raising temperatures by 3–4°C in city centres
compared to surrounding areas.
▪ Rapid urbanization is reducing cities’ ability to absorb storm water, increasing flood risk.
▪ The report examined 24 Indian cities, with a special focus on:Chennai, Indore, New Delhi, Lucknow, Surat and Thiruvananthapuram.
▪ With over 50% of 2050’s urban infrastructure yet to be built, India has a critical opportunity to develop resilient, green urban infrastructure.
