- The supernova was detected by the PanSTARRS (Panoramic Survey Telescope and Rapid Response System Survey) located at Haleakala Observatory, Hawaii, US, on 22 February 2016, in a galaxy 4.6 billion light-years from Earth. A light-year is the distance light travels in a year, 5.9 trillion miles (9.5 trillion km).
