Latest Inventions on Science & Technology India’s First Wildlife Biobank ▪ Established at Padmaja Naidu Himalayan Zoological Park (PNHZP), Darjeeling. ▪ Operational since July 2024. ▪ In collaboration with Centre for Cellular and Molecular Biology (CCMB), Ministry of Science & Technology. Biobank Purpose & Storage: ▪ Preserves genetic materials (DNA, tissues, reproductive cells) from endangered species. ▪ Uses cryogenic storage (-196°C, liquid nitrogen) to ensure long-term viability. Current Status (Feb 2025): ▪ Collected genetic materials from 60 animals across 23 species. Future Plans: ▪ Similar biobanks planned for Delhi Zoo & Nandankanan Zoo (Odisha). ▪ Potential role in species revival and genetic research.
