Reports and Indices Report by ILO According to the report by International Labour Organization (ILO) titled ‘A Call for Safer and Healthier Working Environments’, nearly 30 lakh workers die every year globally due to work-related accidents and diseases. More than 63% of these deaths are reported from the Asia-Pacific region. Exposure to long working hours (55 hours or more per week) was the biggest “killer”, with almost 7.45 lakh people dying of it in 2016, followed by exposure to occupational particulate matter, gases, and fumes (4.5 lakh deaths) and occupational injuries (3.63 lakh deaths). India has not ratified the two ILO conventions, namely: ILO Occupational Safety and Health Convention Promotional Framework for Occupational Safety and Health Convention, 2006.

Reports and Indices 7.5 million new cases of TB in 2022: WHO Global Report World Health Organisation recently released the WHO Global Tuberculosis Report. Key Highlights of the report 7.5 million people were newly diagnosed with TB in 2022 India, Indonesia and the Philippines collectively accounts for nearly 60% of the reduction in the number of people newly diagnosed with TB in 2020 and 2021. TB caused an estimated 1.30 million deaths in 2022 Production Gap Report 2023 The Production Gap Report 2023 was jointly released by Stockholm Environment Institute (SEI), Climate Analytics, E3G, International Institute for Sustainable Development (IISD) and the UN Environment Programme (UNEP) recently The report states that many countries are planning to produce twice as much fossil fuels in 2030 which is more consistent with limiting warming to 2 degrees Celsius than limiting it to 1.5 degrees Celsius About Production Gap Report 2023 Launch – 2019 It tracks the discrepancy between countries' planned fossil fuel production and global production levels consistent with limiting warming to 1.5°C or 2°C

Reports and Indices ‘Road accidents in India — 2022' report released The Annual Report ‘Road Accidents in India-2022” has been published by the Ministry of Road Transport and Highways. The annual report is based on the data/information received from United Nations Economic and Social Commission for Asia and the Pacific (UNESCAP). According to the report a total of 4,61,312 road accidents occurred in 2022, which claimed 1,68,491 lives, while 4,43,366 people were injured. Tamil Nadu with 64,105 accidents (13.9%) recorded the highest number of road accidents in 2022 followed by Madhya Pradesh (54,432 i.e.,11.8%). Uttar Pradesh recorded the highest number of persons killed in road accidents followed by Tamil Nadu.

Reports and Indices First edition of ‘India AI’ Report Submitted The first edition of ‘India AI’ Report Submitted by Seven Working Groups (WGs) of the Ministry of Electronics and Information Technology (MeitY) It will serve as India’s guiding roadmap for the development of its Artificial Intelligence (AI) ecosystem. Research fellowships and grants for building research capability in tier 2-3-4 institutions. India AI Future Labs Compute: Establish best-in-class AI compute infrastructure at five locations, with a capacity of 3000 AI Peta flops. Semicon India AI Chipsets: Design of AI chipsets with High-Performance Computing under Semicon India future Design Linked Incentive Scheme.

Reports and Indices Periodic Labour Force Survey (PLFS) Annual Report 2022-2023 Released The sixth Annual Report is released by the National Sample Survey Office (NSSO) on the basis of Periodic Labour Force Survey conducted during July 2022-June 2023. Key Findings of PLFS, Annual Report 2022- 2023 Increasing Trend in Labour Force Participation Rate (LFPR) for persons of age 15 years and above: In rural areas, LFPR increased from 50.7% in 2017-18 to 60.8% in 2022-23 while for urban areas it increased from 47.6% to 50.4%. LFPR for male in India increased from 75.8% in 2017-18 to 78.5% in 2022-23 and corresponding increase in LFPR for female was from 23.3% to 37.0%. Increasing Trend is observed in Worker Population Ratio (WPR) for persons of age 15 years and above.  Decreasing Trend is observed in Unemployment Rate (UR) for persons of age 15 years and above India's unemployment rate for persons aged 15 years and above was recorded at a six-year low of 3.2 per cent during July 2022-June 2023.  Note  LFPR - Percentage of persons in the labour force who are working or seeking or available for work. WPR - Percentage of employed persons in the population. UR - Percentage of persons unemployed among the persons in the labour force. Reports and Indices Global Hunger Index 2023 The Global Hunger Index 2023 was released by Irish NGO Concern Worldwide and German NGO Welt Hunger Hilfe. India ranks 111 out of a total of 125 countries. India’s ranking is based on a Global Hunger Index score of 28.7 on a 100 point scale where 0 is the best score (no hunger) and 100 is the worst. This categorises India’s severity of hunger as “serious” Key scores: Child wasting - 18.7 per cent Rate of undernourishment - 16.6 per cent Under-five mortality - 3.1 per cent. Prevalence of anaemia in women aged between 15 and 24 years - 58.1 per cent. About GHI Objective – To comprehensively measure and track hunger at global, regional, and national levels. Reports and Indices 479 maternal deaths in Tamil Nadu in one year According to the Department of Public Welfare, 479 maternal deaths have occurred in Tamil Nadu in one year. 20 percent of people died due to high blood pressure. Similarly, it has been revealed that pregnant women died due to excessive bleeding and heart problems during childbirth. Various schemes are being implemented in Tamil Nadu to avoid maternal deaths. Apart from medical tests and treatments, special programs are being implemented to ensure nutrition for pregnant women. Reports and Indices World Bank Report on Progress of Swachch Bharat Project The Swachch Bharat – Rural (SBM-G) program has been found to have benefited immensely. Key Findings The report found that low-income states were the best performers and wealthiest states were partial performers in terms of overall increases in routine use of toilets. When the scheme started, there was a huge gap especially among the Scheduled Castes and Scheduled Tribes. More than 100 million toilets have been completed and access to toilets has improved. And the report comes as a vindication of the government's claims that practices such as open defecation and manual scavenging will no longer continue in India. Reports and Indices State of India’s Birds (SoIB) Report 2023 SoIB is published by the State of India’s Birds Partnership. It is a group of 13 government and non-governmental organisations. Key Highlights of the Report The report assessed the status of 942 bird species largely using data uploaded by birdwatchers to the online platform eBird. Of the 942 Indian bird species assessed for conservation priority, the report found 217 species stable and 204 declining in the past three decades. As many as 178 species were classified under “high conservation priority” and 14 species, including Indian roller, were recommended for the International Union for Conservation of Nature’s Red List reassessment. 60% of bird species declined in India over a period of 30 years   About e-bird Launch – 2002 Developer – Cornell University and the National Audubon Society

Reports and Indices World Malaria Report 2022 The report was published by the World Health Organization (WHO). According to the report, the COVID-19 pandemic has disrupted attempts to control malaria, resulting in 63,000 more deaths and 13 million more infections globally over the last two years. The report offers in-depth information on the latest trends in malaria control and elimination at global, regional and country levels. The report highlights progress towards global targets and describes opportunities and challenges for curbing and eliminating the disease. Key highlights of the Report Malarial Deaths : High-burden malaria countries maintained a strong fight against the disease in 2021 despite the Covid-19 pandemic, with cases and deaths stabilising. While deaths came down to 619,000 in 2021 from 625,000 in the first year of the pandemic, it remained higher than the pre-pandemic level of 568,000 deaths in 2019. Trend of Malaria Cases As for Malaria cases, the upward trend continued but at a slower rate — 247 million cases in 2021, compared to 245 million cases in 2020 and 232 million in 2019. Among the 11 high-burden countries, five — the Democratic Republic of the Congo, Ghana, India, Niger and the United Republic of Tanzania — recorded a decline in deaths.
