Number of rural workers who opt for farm jobs has dropped by 20%: planning panel report
▪ A study by the State Planning Commission has revealed a structural shift in rural livelihoods,
marked by a 20% decline in dependence on agriculture for employment since 2012.
▪ Young workers (aged 15-34) lead this transition, preferring non-farm jobs for better wages and
more stability.
▪ The study on rural non-farm employment indicated that over 75% of men and 50% of women
were employed in non-agricultural activities.
▪ The study was carried out in 12 villages of six districts with higher as well as lower rural nonfarm economy.
▪ It pointed to a significant shift from agriculture, with an increasing number of workers involved in non-farm sectors, such as construction and manufacturing.
▪ The other reports prepared by the State Planning Commission are ‘Tamil Nadu’s vision for
sustainable development goals’, ‘Tamil Nadu’s automotive future’, and ‘Reimagining Tamil Nadu – Path to knowledge economy’.
▪ ‘Reimagining Tamil Nadu – Path to a knowledge economy’ focuses on two key pillars: Global
Capability Centres and the future of manufacturing.

Tamil Nadu government reconstitutes State Consumer Protection Council
▪ The Tamil Nadu government has reconstituted the State Consumer Protection Council with the Minister for Food and Civil Supplies as its chairperson.
▪ There are 22 members in the panel, including elected representatives Vellore MP D.M. Kathir Anand, Thanjavur MP S. Murasoli, Tambaram MLA S.R. Raja and Vikravandi MLA Anniyur Siva.
▪ The Secretary of Co-operation, Food and Consumer Protection Department, the Commissioner of Civil Supplies and Consumer Protection Department, the Registrar of State Consumer Disputes Redressal Commission, the Chairman and Managing Director of Tamil Nadu Generation Distribution Corporation Limited are also members in the panel.
