Gangaikonda Cholapuram
▪ Gangaikonda Cholapuram in Ariyalur district will host an event on July 27, 2025, to commemorate the 1,000th anniversary of King Rajendra Chola I’s conquest of the Gangetic plains.
▪ King Rajendra Chola I founded Gangaikonda Cholapuram after his northern conquest.
▪ It was the Chola capital for 250 years, located on the banks of the Kollidam River.
▪ A report from the 1855 Gazetteer of South India (quoted in The Colas by K.A. Nilakanta Sastri) compares Gangaikonda Cholapuram to the ruins of Babylon.
▪ Describes the area as having a large, richly crafted pagoda, surrounded by jungle and ruins resembling ancient mounds.
National Level Clean City: Chennai Gets 38th Position
▪ Chennai secured the 38th position in the list of India’s cleanest cities.
▪ This ranking is within the category of municipal corporations with a population of over 10 lakh.
▪ The results of the cleanliness survey ‘Swachh Survekshan’ conducted annually by the Central Ministry of Housing and Urban Development under the Swachh Bharat Mission.
▪ They also stated that Chennai has been awarded 6.822 points based on waste removal and
segregated handling of collected waste.
▪ In Tamil Nadu, they reported that Coimbatore secured the 28th position, Madurai the 40th position, and Trichy the 49th position.
