Foundation stone laid for Southeast Asia’s largest desalination plant 

  • Foundation stone was laid for the construction of a new desalination plant at Perur at a cost of 4,276.44 crore.
  • It will have a capacity to treat 400 million litres of seawater per day. 
  • The plant will be the largest of its kind in Southeast Asia.
  • The project will be executed by the Chennai Metropolitan Water Supply and Sewerage Board (CMWSSB) with funding support from the Japan International Cooperation Agency (JICA).

Note 

  • Chennai has two fully functional desalination plants in Minjur, Nemmeli.
