Extreme poverty has decreased in India
▪ According to a World Bank report, extreme poverty has decreased, with 171 million people lifted above the poverty line between 2011 and 2023
▪ Extreme poverty in India fell from 16.2% in 2011-12 to just 2.3% in 2022-23.
▪ India transitioned into the lower-middle-income category as defined by the World Bank
▪ The five most populous states—Uttar Pradesh, Maharashtra, Bihar, West Bengal, and Madhya
Pradesh—accounted to two-thirds of the overall decline in extreme poverty.
▪ However, they still represented 54% of the extremely poor population.
▪ The Multidimensional Poverty Index (MPI) reflects non-monetary poverty. It decreased from 53.8% in 2005-06 to 16.4% by 2019-21. The MPI was measured at 15.5% in 2022-23,
