Aravalli Green Wall Project
▪ In connection with World Environment Day observed yesterday, Prime Minister Modi launched the Aravalli Green Wall Project
▪ The Prime Minister also launched the “Plant a Tree in Mother’s Name” campaign to protect greenery.
▪ Under the United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP), World Environment Day has been observed annually on June 5th since 1973.
▪ The Aravalli Green Wall Project is an initiative to expand green cover in areas across 29 districts of three states and one union territory.
▪ Of the total deforestation in the Aravalli mountain range, 81 percent belongs to Rajasthan, 15.8 percent to Gujarat, 1.7 percent to Haryana, and 1.5 percent to Delhi.
Two new Ramsar sites in Rajasthan- Kichan and Menar
▪ The Union Environment Ministry of India announced the designation of two new Ramsar sites in Rajasthan.
▪ Kichan and Menar wetlands have been recognised for their ecological significance. This brings India’s total Ramsar sites to 91, the highest in Asia.
▪ The Ramsar Convention aims to conserve wetlands globally.
▪ Ramsar sites are wetlands of international importance. They are designated under the Ramsar
Convention, established in 1971.
