Reservation for Differently-Abled in Local Government Bodies
▪ According to the Tamil Nadu Local Government Amendment Act, the Tamil Nadu government has called for application forms for the nomination of differently-abled persons as members to municipal corporations, municipalities, and town panchayats.
▪ Through this, 12,000 differently-abled individuals will get opportunities in local government bodies.
▪ In all local government bodies in Tamil Nadu – including village panchayats, panchayat unions,town panchayats, municipalities, and municipal corporations – differently-abled persons are being made members through nomination rather than directly contesting elections.
▪ Amendments have been made to the Tamil Nadu Panchayats Act 1994 and the Tamil Nadu
District Municipalities Act 1998. 650 differently-abled persons will be appointed in urban local
bodies, 12,913 differently-abled persons in village panchayats, 388 differently-abled persons in
panchayat unions, and 37 differently-abled persons in district panchayats.

UMIS Platform
▪ The Information Technology Minister has announced that 9.40 lakh students have benefited from the Tamil Pudhalvan and Pudhumai Penn schemes through the University Management Information System (UMIS) platform.
▪ The University Management Information System (UMIS) operates by integrating data from all higher education institutions and students in Tamil Nadu.
▪ Similar to the Education Management Information System (EMIS), this platform is designed as a single-window system and carries out functions including automating processes and helping to conduct analyses required for the higher education sector.
About Tamil Pudhalvan Scheme
▪ Tamil Nadu Chief Minister on August 9, 2024, launched the Tamil Pudhalvan scheme in
Coimbatore.
▪ Under this, boys of the state government schools and government aided schools who join colleges will get ₹1,000 per month.
▪ It is on the lines of Pudmaipen Scheme for girl students.
About Pudhumai Penn Scheme
▪ Tamil Nadu Chief Minister on September 5,2022, launched the Moovalur Ramamirtham
Ammaiyar Higher Education Assurance scheme titled ‘Pudhumai Penn’ at a function in Chennai, in the presence of Delhi Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal.
▪ Under Pudhumai Penn scheme, girl students, who studied from Class VI to Class XII in state
government schools and government aided schools, would be paid a monthly assistance
of ₹1,000 till they complete their graduation or diploma or ITI courses.
