Mangrove Restoration in Tamil Nadu
Mangrove saplings were planted by Environment and Climate Change Minister at the Adyar estuary, Chennai, ahead of World Mangrove Day (July 26).
Mangrove Restoration Scheme (2023–2026)
Launched: February 2023.
Budget: ₹25 crore.
Duration: 3 years (up to 2026).
Coverage: Targets 10 districts, includes both forest and revenue lands Scale of Restoration Efforts (Since 2022)
Total Area Revived: Over 2,900 hectares of mangroves.
Targeted Area: Across 9 coastal districts of Tamil Nadu.
Goal: Reduce effects of cyclones, tidal surges, erosion, and to support biodiversity and local
livelihoods.
Bio-shield plantations using trees such as casuarina, palmyrah, and cashew have been introduced to protect against wind and wave action.
Rare Species Reintroduced: Sonneratia apetala, Xylocarpus granatum, Kandelia candel.
New Quality Assurance Lab for Government Health Facilities – Tamil Nadu
Objective: To ensure the quality of diagnostic tests conducted at government-run labs across Tamil Nadu.
Location: Established at State Public Health Laboratory (SPHL), under the Directorate of Public Health
(DPH) and Preventive Medicine, Chennai.
Pilot Project (DPH-EQAS) (External Quality Assurance Scheme)
This Programme is being rolled out at 116 PHC laboratories in Tiruvallur and Chengalpattu districts.
Mobile App: Launched to upload lab results.
