Brain-Eating Amoeba
▪ Primary Amoebic Meningoencephalitis (PAM) is a rare and often fatal brain infection caused by the amoeba Naegleria fowleri, commonly known as the “brain-eating amoeba.”
▪ It is found in contaminated warm freshwater sources such as wells, ponds, and lakes
▪ Transmission: Naegleria fowleri enters the body through the nose when a person swims or bathes in contaminated freshwater. It then travels to the brain, causing tissue destruction and inflammation.
▪ It does not spread through drinking water or from person to person.
