Kavach System
Kavach is a Train Collision Avoidance System (TCAS), a train control system with collision
prevention features.
It has been adopted as India’s national automatic train protection system.
The system adheres to safety interoperability standards.
Acting like a “vigilant guardian” over the existing signaling system, Kavach alerts the Loco Pilot if the train approaches a red signal, and, if necessary, automatically applies brakes to prevent a signal overshoot.
In emergency situations, the system can send SoS (Save Our Soul) messages.
It also provides centralized real-time monitoring of train operations through the Network Monitor System.
The Indian Railways Signal Engineering and Telecommunication Kavach Centre of Excellence is located in Secunderabad, Telangana.
Currently, the Kavach train protection system has been installed in 1,200 train rakes.
