Election Commission of India
The Election Commission of India (ECI) is an autonomous constitutional authority responsible for administering central and state election processes in India.
It was established on 25 January 1950 under the Constitution of India (celebrated as National Voters’ Day).
The Commission’s office is located in New Delhi.
It conducts elections to the Lok Sabha, Rajya Sabha, State Legislative Assemblies, and the offices of President and Vice President of India.
The ECI does not oversee elections for Panchayats or municipal bodies in the states; separate State Election Commissions handle these, as provided by the Constitution.
The President of India appoints the Chief Election Commissioner (CEC) and other Election Commissioners, including their terms of office and conditions of service, as per the Election Commission (Conditions of Service of Election Commissioners and Transaction of Business) Act, 2023.
Part XV (Articles 324–329) of the Constitution deals with elections and provides for the
establishment of the Election Commission to manage electoral processes.
