  • Decisive war between East India Company and Mysore forces
  • Porto Novo, meaning New Port in Portuguese, is located on the north bank of the mouth of the Vellar River in Cuddalore district.
  • This place is now known as Parangipettai. The British East India Company defeated Hyder Ali’s troops in the Battle of Porto Novo which took place in July 1781.
  • The Tamil Nadu Small Industries Corporation Limited (TANSI)
  • The Tamil Nadu Small Industries Corporation Limited (TANSI) was set up on December 1, 1965 to take over small industrial units run by the Department of Industries and Commerce.
  • These units were set up during the first three Five-Year Plans to promote industrial growth.
  • TANSI later entered other small-scale sectors.
  • Arumbavur wood carvings
  • The Arumbavur wood carvings of Perambalur district are renowned for intricate craftsmanship and traditional designs.
  • They are made entirely by hand. Artisans use woods like Aththi, Maavilangai, Vaagai, Vembu, Vengai, and teak, while temple cars are carved from Illuppai.
  • The craft received the GI tag in 2020.
  • Ordnance Factory
  • Ordnance Factory Tiruchirappalli (OFT), established on July 3, 1966 by Prime Minister Indira Gandhi, is India’s largest small arms manufacturer.
  • It began production in 1967 and was earlier part of the Ordnance Factory Board.
  • OFT produces a wide range of rifles, carbines, and light machine guns for defence forces.
  • Madras Observatory
  • Madras Observatory, one of the earliest astronomical and meteorological observatories in India, was opened by Governor Sir Charles Oakeley in 1792.
  • It marked the start of systematic weather observation in the region, decades before India
  • Meteorological Department was set up in 1875.
