New GI Tags for Tamil Nadu

  • Recently, five products from Tamil Nadu have secured the Geographical Indications (GI) tag.
  • With these additions, Tamil Nadu now has 74 GI-tagged products.
  1. Woraiyur cotton sari
  • Native to Tiruchi district; woven in Manamedu on the banks of the Cauvery.
  • Yarn from Coimbatore & Rajapalayam, dyes from Jayamkondam.
  1. Kavindapadi nattu sakkarai
  • Produced in Erode district.
  • Made from sugarcane grown under the Lower Bhavani Project canal.
  • Traditional method: mechanical crushing + slow evaporation of cane juice.
  1. Thooyamalli rice
  • A traditional sambha-season rice variety, 135–140 day crop.
  • GI application by Tamil Nadu State Agricultural Marketing Board, with NABARD Madurai ABI Forum support.
  1. Namakkal makkal pathirangal / kalchatti
  • Traditional soapstone cookware from Namakkal.
  • Long usage history in South Indian kitchens.
  • Earlier application withdrawn in 2019; new application in 2022 by Namakkal Stone Products Manufacturers & MSME IP Facilitation Centre.
  1. Ambasamudram choppu saman
  • Handmade miniature wooden toys from Tirunelveli district.
  • Over 200-year-old craft tradition.
  • Made from indigenous woods like Manjal Kadamba, teak, rosewood.
