Olive Ridley Turtle Conservation

  • Context: The Wildlife Management Authority and officials of the Coringa Wildlife Sanctuary in Andhra Pradesh have successfully protected nearly 20,000 Olive Ridley turtle eggs on Hope Island.

Coringa Wildlife Sanctuary

  • It is located in the estuarine region of the Godavari River in Andhra Pradesh.
  • It harbors India’s second-largest mangrove forests.
  • This sanctuary was established in 1978.

Olive Ridley Turtles

  • Olive Ridley turtles are known for their mass nesting behavior, referred to as Arribada.
  • The Olive Ridley turtle is classified as a ‘Vulnerable’ species by the IUCN and is listed under Schedule I of the Wildlife Protection Act, 1972.
