Indian Government Proposed Isobutanol Blending in Diesel
-
- Context: The Government of India is likely to introduce a mandate for blending isobutanol with diesel by the end of 2026.
- The initiative is being considered by the Ministry of Road Transport and Highways (MoRTH).
Objective
- Enhance India’s energy security.
- Reduce dependence on imported fossil fuels.
- Support decarbonisation of the transport sector.
About Isobutanol
-
- Isobutanol (isobutyl alcohol) is a type of alcohol that can be produced from plant-based sources.
- It is used in: Biofuels, Pharmaceuticals, Fragrances and flavours, Paints, lacquers, and chemical manufacturing
Significance of Diesel Blending
-
- Diesel consumption in India is nearly twice that of petrol.
- Blending biofuels with diesel can have a greater impact on: Fuel import reduction, Energy security, Carbon emission reduction
Ethanol Blending Programme
- India has increased ethanol blending in petrol from 1% to nearly 20% (E20) over the last decade.
-
- The programme has reduced crude oil imports significantly.
- E20 refers to 20% ethanol blended with petrol.
Higher Ethanol Fuel Initiatives
-
- Draft notifications have been issued for:
- E85 fuel (85% ethanol + 15% petrol)
- E100 fuel (nearly pure ethanol)
- Separate fuel dispensers are proposed for these fuels.
