Climate-Resilient Cooling Initiative

  • On World Environment Day 2026, the Government of Tamil Nadu launched a Standard Operating Procedure (SOP) for Cool Roof Coating application a first-of-its-kind state-level technical framework for establishing a structured framework for large-scale, quality-assured deployment of cool roof technology.
  • The SOP promotes a passive cooling solution to reduce heat stress and improve indoor thermal comfort without relying on mechanical cooling systems.
  • Developed jointly by the Tamil Nadu Green Climate Company (TNGCC) and the United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP).

 

Tamil Nadu Statewide Synchronised Bird Survey 2025–26

  • Context: Hon’ble Minister of Forests and Hon’ble Minister of Environment released the survey reports on 5th June, 2026 on the occasion of World Environment Day, highlighting long-term monitoring of avian diversity of the state towards achieving our conservation goals through scientific management of critical habitats.

Overview

  • The Tamil Nadu Forest Department has been conducting annual statewide synchronised bird surveys since 2023 to assess avifaunal diversity and support conservation planning. 
  • The latest wetland and terrestrial bird surveys were held in December 2025 and February 2026 with participation from officials, experts, volunteers, and bird watchers.

Wetland Bird Survey (27–28 Dec 2025)

  • Documented 35 IUCN Red List threatened species
  • Key species: Flamingos, Cormorants, Egrets, Northern Pintail, Garganey, Little Stint

Terrestrial Bird Survey (14–15 Feb 2026)

  • Identified 36 IUCN Red Listed species
  • Key species: Nilgiri Wood-Pigeon, Malabar Imperial Pigeon, Sri Lankan Frogmouth, Painted Bush-Quail

Ecological Significance

  • The surveys highlight Tamil Nadu’s rich avifaunal diversity supported by wetlands, forests, coastal ecosystems, estuaries, mangroves, and irrigation tanks, making the state a crucial habitat along migratory flyways.
