  • Context: Having remained in power through successive electoral victories, Narendra Modi has now surpassed Jawaharlal Nehru to hold the distinction of being India’s longest-serving Prime Minister.

About the Prime Minister of India

  • Constitutional Position (Article 75): The Prime Minister is appointed by the President and serves as the key leader of the Union Government. Real executive authority rests with him.
  • Head of the Council of Ministers (Article 74): The Prime Minister heads the Council of Ministers, which aids and advises the President in the discharge of official duties.
    • Role: The Prime Minister acts as a vital link between the President and the Council of Ministers. In addition to communicating the Council’s decisions to the President, he offers advice on significant matters such as appointments, the summoning of Parliament sessions, and the dissolution of the Lok Sabha.
  • Head of Key Bodies: The Prime Minister also heads several important organizations and committees, such as NITI Aayog, the National Integration Council, and the Inter-State Council.
