Heat Action Plan (HAP) 2026 – Tamil Nadu

  • Context: The Government of Tamil Nadu has introduced the State Heat Action Plan (2026) to reduce heat-related illnesses and improve preparedness for heatwaves.

Objective

  • To strengthen early warning systems, planning, and response mechanisms for heatwaves
  • To ensure better coordination across different sectors during extreme heat conditions

Risk Assessment Method

  • Uses the Steadman Heat Index, which combines temperature and humidity
  • Helps measure how hot it actually feels to humans (heat stress level)

Planning Approach

    • Conducts detailed heat-risk mapping
    • Covers hazard, exposure, and vulnerability analysis
  • Assessments are done at village panchayat and urban ward levels

Implementation Agencies

  • Prepared by the Tamil Nadu State Disaster Management Authority
  • In collaboration with the Tamil Nadu Disaster Risk Reduction Agency
