- A non-profit organization under the Ministry of Electronics and Information Technology.
- Registered under Section 8 of the Companies Act, 2013.
- Objective: To expand internet access in India and globally.
- Main role: Enables exchange of domestic internet traffic among ISPs and other networks.
Functions
- Strengthens India’s internet system by managing .IN and .Bharat domains.

- Allocates IP addresses (IPv4/IPv6) through IRINN.
- Promotes a secure and inclusive digital ecosystem.
- Operates 79 Internet Exchange Points (IXPs) across India.
- Supports domain names in 22 Indian languages.
IITM–ARIES MoU for BCON Climate Monitoring
- Context: The Indian Institute of Tropical Meteorology (IITM), Pune, and the Aryabhatta Research Institute of Observational Sciences (ARIES), Nainital, have signed a long-term Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) to establish a climate observation station in the Himalayan region, a move aimed at strengthening climate change research and long-term atmospheric monitoring under the Bharat Climate Observation Network (BCON).
BCON Initiative
- Bharath Climate Observation Network is a national programme launched by the Ministry of Earth Sciences and implemented by Indian Institute of Tropical Meteorology.
- It aims to establish a long-term and high-accuracy climate monitoring system across India.
Purpose of the Programme

- To generate reliable and high-quality climate data.
- To help identify long-term climate patterns and changes.
- To strengthen climate research and informed policymaking.
Role in Climate Modelling
- The data collected will be used to validate and enhance Earth System Models.
- It will improve the performance of Earth System Model, including IITM’s model.
- This will lead to better climate predictions and future projections for India.
