- It is an annual assessment of countries’ progress towards achieving the 2030 Sustainable Development Goals.
- It was released by the ‘United Nations Sustainable Development Solutions Network’ (SDSN) at the Hamburg Sustainability Conference 2026.
- The 2026 edition ranks 167 countries (based on an SDG score on a scale of (0-100).
- Newly joined countries: Eritrea and Timor-Leste.

India position
- Rank: 94th (highest ever); 68.3 marks out of 100. In 2025, it has improved from 99th place.
- Improvement: 18 places improvement from 2015 (from 112 to 94); India is one of the fastest growing major economies.
- Regional position: Behind Bhutan, Maldives, Nepal and Sri Lanka, but ahead of Pakistan.
- Outlook to 2030: Only 33.3% of India’s SDG targets are on track.

- Context: India’s latest civil registration data, CRS 2024, released suggests that registration is improving across the country, and that sex ratio at birth is improving in some places, but predictably, progress remains uneven across States and Union Territories.

- The Civil Registration System (CRS) Report 2024 shows that birth and death registration in India has reached near-universal coverage.
- Birth registration: 99.1% in 2024; Death registration: 99.4% in 2024.
- India’s Sex Ratio at Birth (SRB): 917 females per 1,000 males.

- Registered births increased from 2.52 crore (2023) to 2.54 crore (2024).

- 13 States achieved over 90% birth registration, and 15 States achieved over 90% death registration.
