- The All India Survey on Higher Education (AISHE) collects detailed information from Higher Education Institutions (HEIs) through a web-based Data Capture Format (DCF).
- Institutions submit data on student enrolment, faculty, staff, infrastructure, examination results, and other academic indicators.
- AISHE serves as the primary source of official statistics on higher education in India and supports policy formulation, planning, and monitoring.
Key Highlights of the Surveys
High Participation of Higher Education Institutions
- 2022–23: 56,180 out of 60,380 registered HEIs participated.
- 2023–24: 59,533 out of 64,756 registered HEIs participated.
- Participation exceeded 90% in both survey years, indicating strong institutional engagement.
Gross Enrolment Ratio (GER)
- Overall GER increased from 23.7 (2014–15) to 29.5 (2022–23) and 30.0 (2023–24).
- Female GER rose from 22.9 (2014–15) to 30.2 (2022–23) and 31.2 (2023–24).
- SC GER increased from 18.9 (2014–15) to 27.8 (2023–24).
- ST GER improved from 13.5 (2014–15) to 22.8 (2023–24).
Gender Parity Index (GPI)
- The GPI, calculated as the ratio of female GER to male GER, reached 1.08 in 2023–24.
- GPI has remained above 1.0 for seven consecutive years, reflecting consistently higher female participation in higher education.
Overall Higher Education Enrolment
- Total enrolment increased from 3.42 crore (2014–15) to 4.46 crore (2022–23) and 4.50 crore (2023–24).
- This represents a 31.5% increase since 2014–15.
Growth in Female Enrolment
- Female enrolment increased from 1.57 crore (2014–15) to 2.18 crore (2022–23) and 2.24 crore (2023–24).
- This marks a 42.2% increase over the decade.
Enrolment of Scheduled Castes (SC) Students
- SC enrolment increased from 46.07 lakh (2014–15) to 69.72 lakh (2023–24).
- This represents a 51.4% increase.
Enrolment of Scheduled Tribes (ST) Students
- ST enrolment rose from 16.41 lakh (2014–15) to 28.83 lakh (2023–24).
- This reflects a 75.7% increase, the highest growth among major social groups.
Enrolment of Other Backward Classes (OBC) Students
- OBC enrolment increased from 1.13 crore (2014–15) to 1.80 crore (2023–24).
- This represents a 60.2% increase.
Growth in STEM Enrolment
- STEM enrolment increased from 91.5 lakh (2014–15) to 1.02 crore (2023–24).
- This highlights the growing emphasis on science, technology, engineering, and mathematics education.
Increased Female Participation in STEM
- The share of female students in STEM disciplines increased from 38.4% (2014–15) to 44% (2023–24).
- This reflects improved gender inclusivity in STEM education.
Growth in Faculty Strength
- Total faculty strength reached 17.32 lakh in 2023–24.
- Male faculty: 55.1%
Female faculty: 44.9%
Increase in Female Faculty
- Female faculty increased from 5.69 lakh (2014–15) to 7.37 lakh (2022–23) and 7.78 lakh (2023–24).
- This indicates sustained growth in women’s representation among higher education teachers.
