Semicon 2.0 

  • CONTEXT:Approved by the Union Cabinet with a ₹1,27,500 crore outlay to strengthen India’s semiconductor design and manufacturing ecosystem

  • Builds on the progress of Semicon 1.0 with a long-term strategy to position India as a global semiconductor hub. 

Objectives

  • Develop a complete semiconductor value chain in India. 

  • Boost domestic chip design and manufacturing. 

  • Strengthen supply-chain resilience and technological self-reliance.

  • Support economic growth and national security. 

Six Pillars of Semicon 2.0

 Design

  • Expand India’s chip design ecosystem. 
  • Promote development of semiconductor IPs, chip designs, and system-level solutions. 
  • Position India as a global centre for semiconductor design. 

Machines & Materials

  • Incentivise manufacturing and R&D of semiconductor equipment, materials, chemicals, and gases. 
  • Strengthen precision manufacturing capabilities. 

More Fabrication Units (Fabs)

  • Encourage establishment of additional silicon, compound semiconductor, discrete component, and display fabs. 
  • Expand domestic chip manufacturing capacity. 

 ATMP/OSAT Expansion

  • Promote advanced ATMP/OSAT facilities. 
  • Attract global firms and advanced packaging technologies to India. 

Research & Development

  • Support development of advanced semiconductor nodes beyond the current 28–110 nm range. 
  • Foster collaboration with leading national and global R&D institutions. 

Talent Development

  • Expand semiconductor education and industry-oriented training. 
  • Enhance skills in chip design, clean-room operations, fab construction, and manufacturing.
