World Soil Day

- It is celebrated every year on 5th December and aims at highlighting the importance of soil.
- The day raises awareness about the need of managing soil resources in an eco-friendly manner.
- It encourages people to make efforts for the improvement of soil health.
- The theme for 2022 is “Soils, where food begins”.
History
- The day was first recommended by the International Union of Soil Sciences (IUSS) as an initiative in 2002.
- In December 2013, the UN General Assembly responded and announced 5 December 2014 as the first official World Soil Day.
Note
- The Soil Health Card (SHC) scheme was launched in 2015 to assess the current status of soil health, and when used over time, to determine changes in soil health.
- Pradhan Mantri Krishi Sinchayee Yojana was launched on July 1, 2015 to prevent soil erosion, regeneration of natural vegetation, rainwater harvesting and recharging of the groundwater table.
- National Mission for Sustainable Agriculture (NMSA) launched in 2014-15 has schemes promoting traditional indigenous practices such as organic farming and natural farming.

B-21 Raider nuclear stealth bomber

- Northrop Grumman Corporation (US) has recently unveiled its new B-21 “Raider” jet, the first of a new class of long-range stealth nuclear bombers for the United States Air Force.
- The B-21 Raider will utilize cutting-edge stealth technologies for nuclear missions and long-range bombardment. The B-21 Raider aircraft will be subsonic. The average speed is 563 miles per hour.

Silchar-Sylhet Festival 2022
- The first ever festival celebrating cultural ties between the neighbouring regions of India and Bangladesh, Silchar-Sylhet festival 2022, was held in Barak Valley, Silchar, Assam from 2 to December 4.
- The festival celebrated the linguistic and cultural ties between the Barak Valley region of Assam, India and the Sylhet segment of Bangladesh.
- The event was organised by the India Foundation under the aegis of the Ministry of Culture in association with the Bangladesh Foundation for Regional Studies.
- The Silchar-Sylhet festival coincides with the 75th year of India’s Independence and the 50th anniversary of the liberation of Bangladesh from Pakistan.

- India and Bangladesh share 4096.7 km. of border, which is the longest land boundary that India shares with any of its neighbours.
- India helped Bangladesh in its independence from Pakistan in 1971.
