Environment and Ecology
Eco-sensitive Zones (ESZs)
Areas around national parks and wildlife sanctuaries, serving as “shock absorbers” for protected areas.
Usually extend within 10 km of these boundaries, but can vary.
Function as transition zones from higher protection to lesser protection areas.
Not intended to disrupt local daily activities but to safeguard and enhance the environment.
Policy Frameworks
Two significant reports
✓ Gadgil report: Advocated strong environmental regulations and extensive ESZs.
✓ Kasturirangan report: Recommended a balance, reducing ESZ areas for developmental needs.
Recent Developments in Kerala
2013, Kerala proposed 9,993.7 sq km as ESZs, But in 2019, Proposal reduced to 8,656 sqkm.
In May 2024 ,Kerala included 12 villages from Wayanad district as ESZs.
