Tamil Nadu Green Initiatives
▪ Tamil Nadu’s Chief Minister launched the Green Tamil Nadu Movement in 2021, marking the first such initiative in India, with the aim of increasing the state’s green cover from 23.7 percent to 33 percent.
▪ In 2021, an announcement was made to establish 100 Maragatha Pooncholai (village tree parks) at a cost of Rs. 25 crores. So far, 83 Maragatha Pooncholai projects have been completed, while work is ongoing at 17 locations. This program is being implemented only in Tamil Nadu across all of India.
▪ Forests around major cities like Chennai, Madurai, Trichy, and Coimbatore are being significantly affected by urbanization. To reclaim these areas, the Athivanam Development Project (Native Forest Development Project) has been announced.
