  • CONTEXT: The Tamil Nadu government has reconstituted the State Vigilance and Monitoring Committee for Scheduled Castes and Scheduled Tribes. The Chief Minister will be the Chairman of the committee, while 59 individuals, including all elected representatives to Parliament and the Assembly from the State, who belong to the SCs and STs, have been inducted as members. Objectives

  • Monitor the implementation of the Scheduled Castes and Scheduled Tribes (Prevention of Atrocities) Act, 1989
  • Review the prevention, investigation, and prosecution of atrocities against SCs and STs. 
  • Ensure speedy relief, compensation, and rehabilitation for victims. 
  • Review the implementation of welfare and protection measures for SCs and STs. 
  • Monitor the performance of district authorities in implementing SC/ST protection laws.
  • Recommend measures to improve the safety, justice, and socio-economic development of SC/ST communities.
