BrahMos missile

  • A supersonic anti-ship missile jointly developed by India and Russia.
  • Named after the first parts of the names of the Brahmaputra River and the Moskva River.
  • Developed jointly by India’s DRDO (Defence Research and Development Organisation) and Russia’s NPO Mashinostroyenia.
  • Supersonic anti-ship and surface-to-surface missile. Up to Mach 2.8 (about three times the speed of sound).
  • Initially 290 km, now expanded to 450 km.
  • Used by the Indian Air Force and Army.
  • Can be launched from ships, submarines, aircraft and land.
  • India is currently developing the BrahMos-2 Hypersonic (Mach 7 speed) missile.
  • In 2024, the Philippines will be the first country to purchase BrahMos missiles from India.
