School dropout rates exceed national average in multiple states

  • Secondary School Dropout Rate: In 2021-22, official data revealed that the secondary school dropout rate in several states exceeded the National average of 12.6 percent. 
  • These findings were collated from the Project Approval Board (PAB) meetings held under the Ministry of Education to discuss the implementation of the ‘Samagra Shiksha’ program.
  • The government considers dropout rates as a hindrance to achieving the objectives outlined in the National Education Policy.
  • Aim – To attaining a 100% Gross Enrolment Rate (GER) at the school level by 2030

  • The Dropout rate in Bihar – 20.46 %, Gujarat 17.85 %, Assam 20.3 %, Meghalaya 21.7 %, at the secondary level in 2021-22.
  • The dropout rate among scheduled tribes and Muslim children at the secondary level remained significantly high.
  • These statistics align with a survey conducted by the United Nations Children’s Emergency Fund (UNICEF) in 2022, which found that 33% of girls in India drop out of school due to domestic work.
