World Air Quality Report 2024

    • India ranks as the fifth most polluted country in the World Air Quality Report 2024, improving from third place in 2023.
    • Thirteen of the top twenty polluted cities globally are located in India. Byrnihat, Assam, is identified as the most polluted city. 
  • PM2.5 levels in India have decreased by 7% but remain dangerously high (50.6 µg/m³ on average).
  • Health Impacts: Air pollution reduces life expectancy by 5.2 years and causes 1.5 million deaths annually due to diseases linked to PM2.5 exposure.
  • Major pollution sources: Vehicle emissions, industrial discharges, biomass and crop burning contribute significantly.

Household Consumption Expenditure Survey 2023-24

  • Conducted by National Statistics Office (NSO) under Ministry of Statistics & Programme Implementation (MoSPI).
    • It highlighting trends in household spending on  405 food and non-food items across rural and urban India.
  • Survey Coverage: All of India (except some remote areas of Andaman & Nicobar Islands).
