Savitribai Phule
- Born on January 3, 1831, in Naigaon village, Satara district, Maharashtra.
- In 1848, along with her husband Jyotirao Phule, she started the first school for girls in Bhidewada, Maharashtra.
- She is hailed as India’s first female teacher.
- In 1852, she established the ‘Mahila Seva Mandal’ organization.
- In 1863, she started the Balhatya Pratibandhak Griha (Home for Prevention of Infanticide).
- In 1852, the British government awarded her the ‘Best Teacher Award’.
- In 1998, the Government of India issued a postage stamp in her honour.
- In 2015, Pune University was renamed after her.
