Brazilian soccer legend Pelé dies at 82

  • Pelé, the Brazilian soccer legend who won three World Cups and became the sport’s first global icon, has died at the age of 82.

Achievements 

  • His 1,279 goals in 1,363 games, which includes friendlies, is recognised as a Guinness World Record.
  • Part of three FIFA World Cup
  • 1958 (Sweden)
  • 1962 (Chile)
  • 1970 (Mexico)
  • Scored a total of 77 goals in 92 games for Brazil over 14 years at international games.
  • In total, he has scored 655 goals in 700 games including league matches

Awards & Honours

Breed Conservation Award 2022

    • Every year Breed Conservation Award is presented by the ICAR (Indian Council of Agricultural Research – National Bureau of Animal Genetic Resource, Karnal (Haryana) for conserving and maintaining the registered Breeds of livestock and poultry.
    • Annually four breed conservation awards will be conferred on 23rd December (Kisan Diwas).
  • A. Sathish from Tamil Nadu won the ‘Breed Conservation Award 2022’ under the individual category for the conservation of over 100 indigenous dogs in his dog farm – “Dolly’s Kennel”.
    • He was recognised for his efforts in conserving ‘Chippiparai’, a hound variety native breed of TN.
  • Dolly’s Kennel is situated in K. Pothampatti village covering the foothills of Puthur Malai in Usilampatti in Madurai.

IAF test-fires extended range BrahMos cruise missile from SU-30MKI

    • The Indian Air Force (IAF) successfully fired the Extended Range (ER) version of BrahMos  cruise missile.
  • It was launched against a ship target from a SU-30MKI fighter aircraft.
  • The test was conducted in the Bay of Bengal region. 
  • The test signifies a capability boost to carry out precision strikes from SU-30MKI aircraft against land/sea targets over very long ranges.
  • The test gives the IAF a strategic reach and allows it to dominate the future battlefields.

About Brahmos:

  • It is a joint venture between the Defence Research and Development Organisation (DRDO) and Russia’s NPO Mashinostroyeniya 
  • The missile derives its name from Brahmaputra and Moskva rivers. 
  • The missile is capable of being launched from land, sea, sub-sea and air against surface and sea-based targets.
  • Range – 450 kms
