Green Hydrogen Mission
- The Union Cabinet approved the National Green Hydrogen Mission with an initial outlay of ₹19,744 crore
- The Mission was aimed at making India a global hub to produce, utilise and export green hydrogen and its derivatives.
- The Ministry of New and Renewable Energy (MNRE) will formulate the scheme guidelines for its implementation.
Main Objectives
- To develop a green hydrogen capacity of at least 5 MMT (million metric tonnes) per annum.
- Creation of more than 6 lakh jobs in the sector.
- To abate nearly 50 million tonnes (MT) of annual greenhouse gas emissions by 2030 which is in line with our Nationally Determined Contributions (NDC) targets.
- To cumulatively reduce fossil fuel imports estimated at over ₹1 lakh crore.
- To make India energy independent and in decarbonising major sectors of the economy.
Note
- The National Hydrogen Mission was launched on August 15, 2021, with a view to cutting down carbon emissions and increasing the use of renewable sources of energy.
- Green hydrogen is the hydrogen produced by splitting water by electrolysis from renewable energy.
