Jarawa tribe – Andaman and Nicobar Islands
▪ The Jarawas are one of the world’s oldest surviving tribes and are mostly hunter-gatherers, living in nomadic bands of 40 to 50 individuals.
▪ The 2011 Census recorded 380 Jarawa individuals out of the 28,530 Scheduled Tribe individuals across Andaman and Nicobar Islands.
▪ The communities counted under the ST population also included Andamanese, Nicobarese, Shompen, Onge, and Sentinelese.
▪ Except the Nicobarese, all communities have been classified as Particularly Vulnerable Tribal Groups (PVTGs)
