Nilgiri Tahr’s Day  – October 7

  • The Tamil Nadu government has announced that Wildlife Conservator E.R.C. Davidhar’s birthday will be celebrated as Nilgiri Tahr Day since 2022. Accordingly, Tahr Day is observed on 7th October every year.

About Tahr

  • State animal  of Tamil Nadu is a monogamous mammal native to the south-western part of the Western Ghats.
  • Tahrs are found only in Tamil Nadu and Kerala. In Tamil Nadu, Anaimalai, Mudumalai, Kalakadu-Mundanturai, Williputhur-Meghamalai Tiger Reserves and Siruvani Hills are found in large numbers.
  • The Tahrs known as ‘Mountain Protectors’ help in developing watersheds also help in maintaining the unique desert-steppe ecosystem that is vital for the survival of mankind.

Nilgiri Tahr’s Project

  • The Government of Tamil Nadu has launched a five-year scheme called ‘Nilgiri tahr’s Project’ to protect the Nilgiri Tahr’s.

Awards & Honour

Nobel Peace Prize 2023

  • Nobel Peace Prize 2023 has been announced to Iranian human rights activist Narges Mohammadi.
  • Contribution – Narges Mohammadi has been given this honour for her tireless work against the oppression of women in Iran and for insisting on democracy, despite facing numerous arrests and years of imprisonment.

About Narges Mohammadi

  • ‘He has been jailed 13 times, convicted 5 times and sentenced to a total of 31 years in prison and 134 lashes,’ said the Nobel Committee.
  • Awarded by – The Norwegian Nobel Committee
  • Cash Prize – The Nobel Peace Prize carries a prize money of $1 million (roughly Rs. 8.32 crore) along with a gold medal and a certificate.
  • Presentation of Award – 10th December

Note

  • The Nobel Prize has been awarded since 1901 in honor of Swedish inventor Alfred Nobel (creator of the prize). The names of Nobel laureates for other fields are announced in Stockholm, Sweden. However, the Nobel Peace Prize winner is selected only by an independent committee of 5 members appointed by the Norwegian Parliament.
