76th Shauriya Diwas – October 27

  • The 76th ‘Shauriya Diwas’ (Valor’s Day) was celebrated to commemorate the Indian Army’s repulse of Pakistani encroachments in the Union Territory of Jammu and Kashmir.

Background

  • Treaty of annexation of Kashmir to India was signed on 26 October 1947 between Maharaja Harisingh and India.
  • The following day, on October 27, Indian troops were landed by the Indian Air Force at Budgam Airport to evacuate Pakistani forces from Jammu and Kashmir.

Note

  • Major Somnath Sharma was the first recipient of the Army’s highest award, the Paramvir Chakra.
