- Karisal, one of the best novels of Sahitya Akademi award-winning writer Ponneelan, has been translated into English by his granddaughter and doctor Priyadarshini under the title ‘Black Soil’.
- The novel ‘Karisal’ was published in 1976 on the theme of propagating left-wing ideologies and the formation of farmers’ unions in and around Kovilpatti.
- Ponneelan won the 1994 Sahitya Akademi Award for his Tamil novel Pudhiya Dharisanangal.
