June 2 – Telangana Formation Day
- The state of Telangana was officially formed on 2nd June 2014.
Background
- After India’s Independence (1947), the govt requested the Nizam of Hyderabad to join the Indian Union, to which he refused.
- In 1948, the Indian army annexed Hyderabad.
- Finally, Hyderabad State acceded to the Indian Union.
- In 1953, the States Re-organisation Commission was appointed.
- In 1956, the Hyderabad State was dissolved as part of the Linguistic Re-organisation of States and Telangana was merged with the Telugu-speaking Andhra State to form Andhra Pradesh.
- On 2 June 2014, the Telangana area was separated from the northwestern part of Andhra Pradesh as the newly formed state with Hyderabad as its capital.
Defence
Medium-range ballistic missile Agni-1 test-fired in Odisha
- A successful training launch of a medium-range ballistic missile, Agni-1 was carried out by the Strategic Forces Command from APJ Abdul Kalam Island, Odisha.
Background
- The Integrated Guided Missile Development Programme (IGMDP) was managed by the Defence Research and Development Organisation (DRDO) for the research and development of the comprehensive range of missiles.
- The project started in 1982–83 under the leadership of Abdul Kalam who oversaw its ending in 2008 after these strategic missiles were successfully developed.

Indian juniors to emerge Asian champions
- India’s junior men’s hockey team maintained its continental supremacy as it beat arch-rival Pakistan 2-1 to emerge Asia Cup champions.
- This was India’s fourth title, having earlier won the tournament in 2004, 2008 and 2015.

India, Nepal sign pacts on energy, transport
- Signed a series of agreements on energy and transport, including export of Nepal’s hydropower to Bangladesh through Indian territory.
- Prime Minister Pushpa Kamal Dahal ‘Prachanda’, visit to India, have set a target of importing 10,000 MW of electricity from Nepal in the coming years, inaugurated integrated check posts (ICPs) at Nepalgunj in Nepal and Rupaidiha on the Indian side.

Mrutyunjay Mohapatra elected vice-president of World Meteorological Organisation
- India Meteorological Department (IMD) Director General (DG) Mrutyunjay Mohapatra was elected as one of the three vice-presidents of the World Meteorological Organisation (WMO), the UN agency for monitoring climate change, early warnings, and disaster preparedness.
- At the WMO elections held in Geneva, Abdulla Al Mandous, Director of United Arab Emirates National Center of Meteorology, was elected President.
- The WMO has a President and three vice-presidents who preside over World Meteorological Congress and the Executive Council.
- The Secretariat, headquartered in Geneva.
- Prof. Celeste Saulo of Argentina has been appointed as the first female Secretary-General of the WMO.
