World No Tobacco Day

- World No Tobacco Day is being observed on may 31 to raise awareness against the dangers of using tobacco.
- The day is a global initiative by the World Health Organisation (WHO) to end the use of tobacco.
- The theme for this year is Unmasking the appeal – Countering nicotine and tobacco addiction.
- On the auspicious day of Vaikasi Visakam, a special permanent postal stamp was released for the Thiruchendur Subramaniya Swamy Temple. On behalf of the India Post Department, a Permanent Pictorial Cancellation (PPC) is issued to commemorate sites of cultural, historical, and tourism significance.
- Recognising that the trauma care of citizens is an integral part of the right to life under Article 21 of the Indian Constitution, the Supreme Court recently passed interim directions, including to operationalise one common helpline number ‘112’ for emergency response throughout the country.
Samadhan Didi
- In a first-of-its-kind initiative, the Government of India launched “Samadhan Didi”, an AI enabled, voice first chatbot for the Centralised Public Grievance Redress and Monitoring System (CPGRAMS), enabling citizens to register grievances simply by speaking in their preferred language.
- The chatbot is designed to help citizens lodge grievances with ease, particularly those who are unsure where to submit a complaint or whom to address it to, and those who are unable to draft complaints in Hindi or English.
- The launch as the “democratisation of the public grievance mechanism”, highlighting the Government’s commitment to enhancing citizens’ access to public services.
Indian National Congress flag adoption (1921)
- The flag of the Indian National Congress, which later evolved into the national flag, was adopted on May 31, 1921.
- This symbol of freedom and unity galvanized the nation’s struggle for independence from colonial rule.
